So its been about 2 years since I wrote the original article on Bulletproof Coffee on CrossFit BWI’s blog. In those two years I have still been drinking Bulletproof Coffee, not really sure I could ever go back to drinking normal coffee. I thought everyone knew about it and it was mainstream by now, but it has been brought to my attention that is not the case. So here we go, prepare to have your mind blown by knowledge and science.

The man behind this incredible beverage is Dave Asprey, basically a mad scientist with his own body, constantly testing and experimenting for the sake of humans becoming more awesome.

So what is Bulletproof Coffee?

Essentially it is a concoction that sets us up to rage for the rest of the day. Remember our nutrition lecture about avoiding sugar and carbs in the morning? Dave and I have the same thoughts about what you should include in your morning nutrition cause were both effing geniuses, duh.


When we get down to the science of this, basically your body is most active to burn fat upon waking…BOOOOM! So lets jump start that system and give it healthy fats, not bullshit bacon or garbage eggs. We also don’t want to turn on carbohydrate metabolism early in the day cause the research shows once that shit is on, it seems to stay on….uhh no thank you.

So how do we make this fat burning, energy boosting delicious mug of awesome.

Just FYI I have nothing to do with any companies I am mentioning here….it might sound as though I am advertising certain things but this is just what I have used and tested myself, and what I have found works the best for me. So sorry if it sounds like I have a hard on for Dave and his products.

It all starts with the beans. Dave has done all the research on this and I couldn’t do it any better so here it is taken from his website bulletproofexec.com

  • 52-91.7% of green coffee beans are contaminated with mycotoxins.(1) 50% of brewed coffee beans are moldy.(2)
  • Caffeine protects coffee beans from mold. Decaf coffee is higher in ochratoxin (3) and aflatoxin. (4)
  • Mycotoxins cause cardiomyopathy (5), cancer (6), brain damage (7) and hypertension and kidney disease. (8) They also make your coffee taste bitter. You want to avoid mycotoxins as much as possible.
  • 10-60% of ochratoxin is not destroyed by roasting. (9)
  • Another study found 4-31% of ochratoxin remains after roasting. (10) This is why it’s crucial to avoid mycotoxins during every step of the production process, not just after the beans are roasted.
  • Coffee that is not processed soon after harvest gets more mold than quickly processed coffee. (11)
  • Coffee develops more mold when it is left to sit, which is how most large scale coffee manufacturers produce their coffee. (12)

Yea all that good stuff, if you don’t understand it then just trust the guy that is way smarter than all of us and agree that normal coffee beans are garbage, clean beans are awesome. Clean beans…haha.

But in all honesty, I thought this was bullshit and just used regular beans for awhile. When I finally switched over to bulletproof beans I felt an immediate difference and will never go back to normal coffee again.

Next up are those healthy fats in the morning that we are talking about. We get this from two separate sources, first from MCT oil, either in its standard form or from coconut oil. Again from Dave’s website

I used coconut oil for years before actually moving over to MCT oil, and to be honest I don’t feel much of a difference. So just get your Medium-chain Triglycerides from one of those two sources and you are good to go!

Last and this is the one that people usually say WTF to, is butter. Specifically organic grass-fed unsalted butter, Kerrygold is what I use. Yes, I put butter in my coffee, no it is not disgusting. This is the ultimate healthy fat, which your body is needing bigtime, especially first thing in the morning. 1-2 TBS added to your coffee is enough to start, but you might find that you would like more, just be easy and play with your tolerance level. On days that I am fasting I have as much as 6-8 TBS in my morning mug, depending on the length of the fast, other days is usually only 3 TBS.

Those are the ingredients we need and here’s my advice on how to make it.

Get yourself a good coffee bean grinder, preferably a burr grinder. Grind your beans fresh (coarse) right before you brew them, makes for fresher and better tasting coffee in my opinion.

French Press that shit. This is new for me, but I will never go back to drip coffee makers. Your coffee will taste better, will be stronger, and who the hell doesn’t want stronger coffee????

Get a blender, whatever you have will probably work just watch out for those damn Ninja to-go blender cups. Some blenders do not work well with hot liquids as it breaks the seal and sprays everywhere.

Toss your butter, some MCT or coconut oil in, 2-3 cups of your clean freshly brewed from your awesome french press coffee, and blend it up until you get a nice frothy top.
