Weekend Recap and Why We Compete

Hurricane Joaquin didn't rain on these 12 Labours athletes this weekend! Two competitions: The Leader of the Pack and the Charm City Throwdown brought out athletes from all three 12 Labours locations. They were tested on their strength, endurance, and overall fitness during the event. We want to send out a big 12L congrats to them and also remind everyone the key factors of competing.

Why Compete?

COMPETE is defined as:

(v) To strive against another or others to attain a goal, such as an advantage or victory.

While the extrinsic factor of competition is competing against others, we step into the gym each day knowing that we are competing with ourselves. We are competing against who we were last year, last week, yesterday; to become better.

Competition cultivates goals, which leads to accomplishment. It should not be seen as a means to an end; of whether you WON or LOST. To truly compete is to gain something from every experience you have. Yes there will be rankings, but regardless of the finish, you must also look at where you started, where you are now, and where you want to be. This kind of competition aids progress.

Sometimes it may be easy to lose sight of the big picture; looking at each workout as the end-all-be-all of ability. However, success, winning- COMPETING is not a straight path filled with only upward mobility. Sometimes the winning factor is getting into the gym after a long day, or walking back in after a bad workout, or simply sticking to your schedule. Understanding the peaks and valleys of training, but continually moving forward, ensures a competitive advantage.

If you understand that, you're well on your way to accomplishing your goals.

Athlete Congratulations:

To all those who stepped out, competed, and conquered to the best of their ability- congrats. Keep working hard, and we'll continue working to help you get further.
